Job description

As a helmsman on a inland shipping vessel you are directly active as the right hand man of the skipper or captain. As a helmsman you can be asked to take the helm for the skipper or captain and navigate the ship. You can also have a supervisory role in directing the other personnel on the ship—deck hands, sailors and able seamen. Coordinating deck duties is also part of the helmsman’s job. Deck duties include maintenance (painting, sanding and rust removal), cleaning, and support during loading and unloading. Checking and running the engines, generators and other systems can also be the helmsman’s responsibility, depending on the ship. It is important for the helmsman to work safely and ensure that the other personnel work safely, using the protection equipment provided, and make every effort to prevent accidents and emergencies.


You can take stress, you are in good physical condition and a hard worker. You are flexible, a good communicator and able to both supervise and cooperate with others.

  • You have a service record with the position of helmsman;
  • Preferably, you have a driving licence;
  • You can handle being away from home for long periods;
  • You have technical and mechanical knowledge and insight.

With regard to pay, DAVANT MARITIME SERVICES offers at least the minimum wage set by the Inland Shipping Collective Labour Agreement (CLA). The cost of travel and food/accommodation on board is also compensated. Of course, if you work via DAVANT MARITIME SERVICES, you will also have opportunities to go on training programs and courses.
