ORDINARY SEAMAN

Would you like to work in inland shipping? You can start by taking a job as a deck hand or ordinary seaman. If you have experience and can work independently, there will be workplaces and job openings for you on a regular basis.

Job Description

The position of Deckhand is assigned to everyone who has applied for a service record. For this position, you must be at least 16 years old and no prior training is required. The position of Ordinary Seaman involves the same work as that of the Deck Hand. The difference is that an ordinary seaman completes the official vocational training for inland shipping.

As an ordinary seaman in inland shipping, you are not expected to take on great responsibilities right away. As an ordinary seaman you begin with the basic duties on board an inland shipping vessel and you are actively guided and directed in the work by the captain. To start, the work you are expected to carry out includes helping with berthing and unberthing the ship (fastening and loosening ropes). You are also responsible for washing, swabbing and and keeping the ship clean. You also support the captain in loading, unloading and maintenance (sanding, chipping and painting the ship). Working on an inland shipping vessel involves risks that do not arise in other workplaces. However, if you properly and actively use the correct work clothing and protection equipment, work safely and strive to prevent accidents and emergencies, the risks of working on the water are quite manageable.

Requirements

To work in inland shipping you need certain qualities. To work in inland shipping you need to be able to handle stress. You need to be flexible, a good communicator, handy and in good physical condition. You must be a hard worker, and of course you should like inland shipping and have no problems working outside a lot.

  • You need to have an Ordinary Seaman service record;
  • You need to be willing to learn and able to work independently;
  • You must be able to handle being away from home for long periods;
  • You should preferably have a driving license.
